Relationships matter. My posts express concerns about the poor and homeless who appear to be forgotten by society as a whole. However, I believe our world includes kind and caring people who are willing to serve those who are less fortunate and suffer from economic, political, and mental disadvantages. I welcome comments from those who agree or feel passionate about social and environmental injustices of the world.
I also have concerns about education, including strategies and methods used to teach our youth who will one day become the leaders of the country. My years as a teacher, mentor, administrator and school consultant had provided me with ideas supported by years of research by experts in the education field.
I am a retired secondary school improvement consultant from the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center in Wilmington, Ohio. I have been in education almost 25 years. (Half in the classroom and the other half administering to educators.)
I spend time reading and writing research that focuses on education and relationship building that promotes student achievement and success. In the 10 years of my retirement, I have written three novels found on my site. These novels came from my concerns about the injustices occurring in our world today. The Langton Soup Kitchen Series covers topics about homelessness, mental illness, racism, police brutality, and white supremacy.
Besides writing novels, I enjoy listening to books on tape as well as curling up with a good book to escape the everyday stresses of our changing world. Technology intrigues me. I am a wife, mother, and grandmother. I love spending time with family and friends.
Escaping from her abusive relationship and a family tragedy, Gloria Westfall finds herself homeless and penniless in a small Georgia town. She assumes a false identity to avoid being found. A Quaker pastor and manager of the local soup kitchen, Joel Clarkston, employs her to show him and the community how to treat the poor by teaching them to serve one another. His love for her clouds his ability to recognize that she is mentally unstable. Sam Wassem, an ex-army soldier who suffers from PTSD, arrives homeless in the same town with “baggage” of his own. Their secrets are exposed as they unite to restore the dignity of the poor and mentally ill.
Sharma Riggs frantically pushed through the door of the Langton Soup Kitchen. Gloria Westfall heard the commotion from where she stood in the kitchen. She dried her hands with the bottom of her apron on her way into the dining area. As she entered, she saw a small Black woman fall to her knees clutching the side of her face and gasping for breath. “Help me. Please, help my daughter,” the sick woman said before she fell to the floor. Gloria wasn't sure which frightened her more, the possibility that the woman had Covid-19 or the color of her skin.
Sharma's death led Gloria, Joel Clarkston, and Sam Wassem of the Langton Soup Kitchen to the south end of town where fear of guns and drugs controlled the neighborhood. Sam's secret helped uncover the sinister plot of two corrupt police officers who threatened those on the south end to keep them quiet. The three formed unexpected friendships and worked together during a pandemic crisis to seek freedom to breathe.
The small town of Langton, Georgia was beginning to prosper after the arrest of the corrupt police officers. The investigation sent the drug and gun dealers packing from the south end of town where the people of color live. But now another threat has arrived in town led by Annabelle Garrison and her stepbrother Cole Griffin.
Annabelle and Cole plan to lead their white supremacists to Langton to protest against the government’s mistreatment of its Vietnam War veterans. Cole’s father returned from the war to start his racist army and Annabelle’s father didn’t survive. They intend to burn down the south end of town where the people they hate live. Both Cole and Annabelle have a mission, but Annabelle’s is more personal. She plans to march down Main Street and find the man who broke her heart many years ago. Joel Clarkston, the pastor of the Langton Friends Meeting, and his fiancé, Gloria Westfall, co-manager of the Langton Soup Kitchen, are the targets of her revenge.

"Saving Our Town
Wow, you definitely know how to wrap up a beautifully sudsy, deeply heartfelt saga. I believe Saving contains some of your best writing thus far. You layer tension, after tension, and manage to keep a lot of balls on the air at a time.
I like too the way you weave mental illness (political/personal) so well throughout your works.
Teach Mankind to Fish
"I just finished your book and find it truly remarkable! You weave together so many complex threads-Gloria/GG’s past, present, and mental condition; Joel’s work.
There is a lot going on in this book and I applaud you for such a sustaining a wonderful readability throughout.
Seeking Freedom to Breathe
In the end it was uplifting, but must say there were times it was painful to read. You are amazing to be able to write in a way that gets into the head of others.
Seeking Freedom to Breathe
Finished the book yesterday. It was very good!! Intense, insightful, lovable characters, provocative and helpful in improving my understanding of institutional, community and individual racism. Read it in three days.

Seeking Freedom to Breathe
I finished the book at 2:15 am last night. When one gets to the end, they just have to read the finish. It is one of the best book I have ever read. It brings the problems of the last few years into the story. Also it reminds us that we still have racism in our country.
